Grasshopper Sparrow & Dickcissel at Luther Marsh

Postby cindym on Tue Jul 02, 2013 8:18 pm

On Sunday, tallied over 70 species birding from 5:30am to 1:30pm(when it started to rain) . We had a Grasshopper Sparrow which I have not had here in previous years which was great to see and hear, Field Sparrow, 5 Swamp Sparrows, Savannah Sparrows, White-Throated Sparrows, Chipping and Song Sparrows. Lots of flycatchers: Eastern Phoebe, Great Crested, Alder, Least and Willow. Few warblers: Yellow, Common Yellowthroat, Ovenbird, Redstart and Blackburnian. Bald eagle, 2 Northern Harriers, 4 Osprey,11 Turkey Vultures, Kingfisher, Green Heron, Common Loon, 4 Sandhill Cranes, Trumpeter Swans with babies,Red-Breasted Mergansers and babies, Gadwall, American Coot, Pie-billed Grebes and nest, 9 Black Terns,Caspian Tern, 2 Virginia Rails, 3 Black-billed Cuckoos, 3 Baltimore Orioles, 4 Indigo Buntings, 3Red-Eye Vireo, 2Warbling Vireo, Flickers, Hairy Woodpecker, Wilson Snipe, Bobolinks, Meadowlarks, Killdeer, Brown Thrasher,Eastern Towhee and more! Oh...almost forgot the Dickcissel on Rd#21,22...still there singing his heart out...and a photographer from Toronto who was relentless upon calling the Dickcissel in with his remote player constantly for quite a long time(he was still there a couple hours later), much to the dismay of a few of us. Anyway...a great day in the marsh, with few bugs! :D

Great birding.

Virginia Rail and Wilson's Snipe calling?

Blackburnian singing?

I had Hermit Thrush and Lincoln Sparrows singing in the southern area along the townline last week.

Hi Fred,
I saw a Virginia rail south of the main entrance (#21-22), and had 2 calling side of road on #15(about 3' in very dense grasses), saw and heard Wilson snipe on #15 also. The grasshopper sparrow was south-west side of marsh on #13. The Blackburnian was singing north of the main entrance. Where is the Townline you are referring to Fred? I had a Veery singing on the West Luther Rd , the only thrush we had on sunday. Yes, it was a nice day!

Wonderful report.

Where were the red-breasted merganser's? I wasn't aware that they are breeding at Luther Marsh.

Thanks,
Kevin

Thanks for the report. Sounds like a great outing. Do you mind sharing where the black terns are?

The Red-Breasted Mergansers were on Siderd#21-22 in the marsh near Monticello, through the area where you used to be able to park which is now chained up. They were not close and a scope is needed. There were 7 Black Terns very close to the berm where the small wooden enclosure is in the same area. We watched them for half an hour, so graceful.

Jeff, there were also 2 Black Terns south of there at Mallard Pond on the same road. Good luck!
