Arthur/ Metz

Postby Malcolm on Thu Jan 06, 2011 8:38 am

Anybody been in the Arthur/ Metz area recently .... is there much snow down or is it spotty? I figured it's about time to have a look around but I hate bare fields.

The fields aren't bare, but there's not enough snow cover to hide the field stubble. Give it a couple more days of snow and it should be a lot better.

Thanks Gail. We need SNOW .. I hate winter photography without snow. Hopefully by next week, I'd like to give the Snowys and snow Bunting a try cause there is zip doing down here.

We got some snow here yesterday. They must be fairly covered by now.

Yes, I'm sure there's a lot more snow on the ground now. Unfortunately my chances of getting out any time soon are looking pretty slim.

As of Saturday Jan. 8, the snow was covering a few fields completely but most fields with longer stubble or plow chunks are still pretty spotty. I saw no Snowy Owls today at Metz or 12/4 after scouring both areas pretty thoroughly. There were a few Snow Buntings and Rough-legged Hawks and an American Kestrel.

Thanks for the scouting reports everybody. The weather forecast is calling for more snow Tuesday and Wednesday next week so I'm thinking I'll head up Thursday for a look.

Was up at 12&4 this morning, and not a Snowie to be seen. Lots of red-tailed hawks and roughies, and a few snow buntings, but no owls. :(

We were up at Metz area, covered two concessions East and 2 West, with no luck whatsoever. Spent close to 4 hrs searching today. Saw one Red-shoulder, many, many Red-tails, and one Roughie only ten minutes from home. Should have stayed close to home. Oh yeah, hundreds of buntings in many flocks between Paris, Canning, and Ayr area.

How do I get to Metz/Arthur to search for the snowy owls?

Metz is south east of Arthur.

Check out Arthur on google maps, look to the East and you have the Luther Marsh.
South of the western Edge of the Luther Marsh is Metz. Sideroad 25, and 3rd Line.

Havn't seen any around Metz this year, but havnt been out that way in weeks.
BUT I have seen a bunch near the shores of Lake Erie.

The no winter maintenance roads north of the Luther Marsh maybe worth a look... During warmer months, they are typically teeming with wildlife. BUT then again, so is the Marsh.
Those roads have been pretty quiet during winter this year for me at least.

I was out last week to the Metz area and watched 2 Northern Harriers in an aerial "battle" or fun play time ... not sure which one. I also saw 2 snowies but you have to go the 12th and 8th line area. I have a few shots but nothing great. Here is one from a couple of weeks ago:

Thanks Lori. I didn't mean to hijack the thread with the shot but I did have some success seeing snowies in that area. I hope others could find them.
