Are you kidding me - in London?

Postby Canadalensrentals on Sat Aug 21, 2010 8:22 pm

Driving past a local water hole in London this afternoon I was astonished to see what looked like a Snowy Egret fishing in the river. I have been used to seeing these in Florida but did not think they were visitors to Canada. Would I be correct in my assumption that it was indeed a Snowy Egret?

They are not common up here, but certainly not unheard of. Many seen on the south shores of lake Erie. Lots of great egrets migrating right now, so you may have seen one of those.

Hi Martin;

It's not uncommon to see a Great Egrets this time of year hanging around the coves...here's a shot of the one that's there right now that I took last week...

Image

But if if you DID see a snowy...please be sure to let us know when and where!

Hi Martin:

Great Egret (known as "Great White Egret" over 'ome, I understand) is by far the most likely species of white heron-y thing around here - lots breeding on the Niagara River, the Huron shore, and a few other places in dribs and drabs.

We do occasionally get smaller white herons, like Snowys and Little Blues, but they're few and far between.

Thank you everyone for replying. I thought it was a Snowy... since it looked like the ones I saw in Florida. But... once again amazed at the wealth of knowledge in here. Amazing resource.

I'll pack the big lens and if I see it again i'll take a shot and post it.

A photo is good, but even if you don't get one, identification is relatively easy - even without bins. For white herons (in Ontario), if it's got bright yellow feet, it's a Snowy - and if it doesn't, it's something else. About 100% of the time, the "something else" will be a Great Egret.

Additionally, the beak colour is helpful. Typically black on Snowy, yellow on Great.

Great discussion fellas...noting the differences between the two very helpful.

Gary your shot is stunning...to me, one of the best I've seen from this area without a doubt! :D
My hubby and I drove to Luther Marsh on Friday evening to see the numerous Great Egrets migrating through that area. At least a hundred or more we saw as they flew into the marsh to roost for the night. What an amazing experience to see and hear with the setting sun. We also saw some GBH, 3 osprey, Lincoln's sparrows, a pied billed grebe and 7 sandhill cranes. :D Worth going just to see this...photographically a bit challenging...at least for me. Here is the silhouette we saw as they came into land with the golden light of the setting sun.

Image Don't think this is showing....

Well here he or she is. I found the bird again this evening in the same spot as previously observed. Unfortunately the Sun had gone down so the shapes are rather flat. Thanks to the light gathering power of the EF400f2.8L IS I was able to at least see something.

The whites are terrible, this is a jpg shot at 1600 ISO at 7:30pm. I promise I will go back when the Sun in shining

I also have a short HD movie. I shall post the link here when I upload it to Vimeo.

Here's the link to a short video of the Egret taken with the Canon 7D/EF400f2.8L IS. Quality is poor due to the low light but this was taken within the city limits of London ON.

Make sure to watch in 1080P

There is currently a Snowy Egret at the Blenheim Landfill in Ontario 110 k = 66 miles from London.
