Just not sure on this Flycatcher

Postby Grenfell on Mon Jun 30, 2014 5:40 pm

Came across this fella at Beverley Swamp ... My first ID was an Olive -sided Flycatcher, but as I look at it and crossref the Field guides - I'm just not sure, so hoping the groups expertise can make the clarification

The photo does not show back and wings so it's difficult to tell. The olive-sided is quite large compared to the empidonax flycatchers as you probably know but they all have distinct eye-ring. Since this one does not have an eye-ring and doesn't appear to have the chest markings of olive-sided, I think it likely that you have the Eastern wood-pewee here. The orange-yellow lower mandible also points to pewee.

Dale: Thanks for the ID. I have this other pic that gives a slightly different angle.

Agree with Dale. This bird has all the field marks of a wood-pewee. While many of these (such as absence of eye-ring) are held in common with Olive-sided, the bird is just not 'vested' enough for that species ... also, I always find that the O-S, when you do see one, gives a kind of "oh, wow, that bird is massive!" impression.
